The 70-year-old author is still two books behind Game of Thrones, with his last book in A Song of Ice Fire releasing in 2011. Martin is forever pushing back the release date of The Winds of Winter and is now reluctant to announce a new one as he doesn’t want to get fans’ hopes up. Speaking with ET at the Game of Thrones season 8 premiere, Martin was reluctant to share a release date. The author said: “I have no date. I’ve given up giving dates because I give one and then I miss it and everyone gets mad.”
Martin added: “It’ll be done when it’s done.”
But with Game of Thrones’ final episode airing tomorrow evening in the US, what if the author is getting ready to surprise fans with The Winds of Winter release date next week?
It’s a long shot, but it would certainly be a good publicity move following bad fan reactions to the final season of Game of Thrones.
There have even been rumours around that Martin has already finished The Winds of Winter and final book A Dream of Spring, which the author has strongly denied.
Speaking with Hollywood Reporter, he said he’d been kept away from the outside world.
“Yeah, I’ve been in isolation.
“My loyal staff — I have a couple of them with me — have chained me to the typewriter.
“They’re making me eat healthy food. It’s horrible!”
