Celtic fans were left shocked earlier this month as details emerged of a possible deal to bring Jose Mourinho to Parkhead.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has been out of work since December after being sacked by Manchester United, but a possible move to Scotland seems unlikely.
Chris Sutton understands that an offer was made to the Portuguese by Celtic chiefs, but the ex-England striker is unsure as to why Mourinho would accept.
“It’s so tough to stand here and say who will be the next Celtic manager because it’s a big job,” Sutton told BT Sport.
‘There’s going to be a lot of managers in for it.
“Mourinho was heavily linked and I’m led to believe that there was something in that in terms of there being an offer.
“But why would he take the Celtic job? I just don’t get it.
“I don’t know the exact terms but there was an offer.”
Mourinho responded to the rumours and revealed that he was humbled to linked to the job.
Whether Mourinho is tempted by the offer remains to be seen, but Sutton thinks that his former club will make their decision next weekend.
He added: “I think we’ll find out very very quickly after the cup final [vs Hearts].
“It’s not just Neil Lennon, Lee Congerton [Celtic’s former head of recruitment] needs replacing.
“Celtic have a big job to do over the summer and when you go back and think about the mess they made last summer they need to step up.”
Sutton is also wary of the threat that Rangers could pose Celtic next season, and admits that summer business could be crucial.
He continued: “Rangers actually brought some pretty decent players this season so it’s going to be a bit of an arms race.
“Whoever gets the better of that may well decide who wins the league.”
