Tiger Woods had begun the second round of the tournament five shots off the lead but had impressed on the opening holes.
Having started from the tenth, Woods hit birdies on the 12th, 13th and 16th but found trouble on the 17th.
The former world No 1 hit two balls into the water on the par-three, eventually carding a seven.
And fans feared the worst for the 43-year-old after the horror show.
One tweeted: “It’s over! He is no longer relevant.”
While another urged: “Just retire and count your money already.”
Woods recovered in the back nine, ending the round with a three-under par 71.
And some fans felt bad for the golfing legend after his shocking hole, with Woods having won 14 majors during a glittering career.
One posted: “Awh god no this has just ruined my afternoon”
And another added: “I’ve dumped two in the water too on #17 at Sawgrass so I feel the pain. That’s the closest thing I have in common with Tiger. Go get them Tiger.”
While a third simply wrote: “I want to cry.”
And a fellow Woods fan commented: “Wake up see Tiger is 2 off the lead, get in the shower, and this pops up on my phone when I get out… day ruined”
Woods himself was in buoyant mood, saying: “I got back to 3-Under, which is doable at this course.
“Anybody who makes the cut can have a chance to win this golf tournament.
“Other than 17 I really haven’t done a while lot wrong.”
