Old footage of Ant and Dec in ‘blackface’ emerges as sketch from Saturday Night Takeaway resurfaces
ANT McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have been caught up in a controversy after footage of them appearing in ‘blackface’ as a pair of Jamaican ladies resurfaced.
The pair, both 43, transformed themselves into “Patty and Bernice” to prank the cast of Emmerdale on Saturday Night Takeaway back in 2003.

The Geordie pair played badly-behaved extras in the Woolpack, distracting stars Emily Symons and Elizabeth Estensen from delivering the lines.
In over-exaggerated Jamaican accents, the pair told the actors: “Thank you for allowing us be on your TV programme, it’s very kind of you.”
Ant explained on camera: “It was funny sitting in a room, learning Jamaican, picking dresses, trying on false nails, was something I didn’t think I’d ever, ever do.”
Dec, mimicking a Jamaican accent added: “We had to find who Patty and Bernice were, so we’d have to go ‘Well, I think Bernice probably came to England on a boat.’”

The following year, the pair dressed up as two Japanese girls called Suki and Keiko – this time to trick the cast of Coronation Street.
Then, in 2005, Ant transformed himself into a headdress-wearing Arab to fool Paul Burrell.
These days, the idea of using ‘blackface’ – where white people using make-up to look like a black person – is widely considered disrespectful.
However, it was regularly used by some of TV’s biggest names, notably in Matt Lucas and David Walliams comedies Come Fly With Me and Little Britain.
