Man Utd told only way to sign Harry Maguire after failing to hijack Matthijs de Ligt move

Manchester United have been chasing Maguire’s signature for well over a year, with the Leicester City ace being a target for the club’s former manager Jose Mourinho.

Last weekend, it was claimed the Red Devils had agreed an £80million deal for the England international, a notion which was vehemently denied by Leicester and United.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also interested in signing De Ligt this summer, though his pursuit of the Ajax skipper has failed to bear fruit.

De Ligt is on the verge of completing a £67.5million move to Italian champions Juventus, which is a bargain considering the Netherlands international’s age and potential.

And Spector believes his old side should’ve gone all out to sign the youngster.

He told American Gambler: “I was actually a bit surprised by [the Maguire approach].

“I think he’s a very good central defender and he has proven himself at the international level as well, but a part of me thought that they would go abroad to fill that role.”

As much as Spector is a fan of De Light, he believes former Sheffield United star Maguire can be a huge hit at Old Trafford.

He would, however, like for United not to pay over the odds for the 26-year-old, who has reportedly told Leicester he wants to leave the King Power Stadium this summer.

He added: ”I thought they would potentially be chasing someone like De Ligt but Maguire is a good player and I think he could be good for the club, but only for the right price.

“It seems like English players command a premium and if they could get him for the right price, I think it would be a good buy.”

Leicester have been steadfast in their refusal to sell Maguire this summer and recently claimed they’ve yet to receive a satisfactory offer for their coveted centre-back.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers said: “Harry’s a top quality player and no-one has come near the valuation to tempt the club to sell.”

He added: “The other club interested is a huge club, but he’s a really good guy.

“I’ve been in this position a number of times and it’s never easy but he’s taken part in everything and hasn’t showed anything other than sheer professionalism.

“You’ve seen that tonight with the 45 minutes he played.”
