John Cena AXED from Royal Rumble: What's next for WWE legend ahead of WrestleMania 35?
WWE announced that Cena will not compete in the 30-men over-the-top-rope battle royal due to an ankle injury he suffered two weeks ago on RAW.
Rumours suggest The Champ’s injury is not real and was taken off the show due to a conflict with his Hollywood schedule.
According to reports, WWE were never going to have The Leader of the Cenation compete in the Royal Rumble and their initial plan was to have NXT call-up Lars Sullivan take him out before the Pay-Per-View showdown.
That would set up a WrestleMania encounter between Cena and Sullivan but the NXT ace couldn’t perform due to a rumoured panic attack.

The publisher and editor of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Dave Meltzer claimed that there is currently no plan for the 16-time world champion ahead of WrestleMania 35.
That means the ex-WWE Champion may be left without a match for the Show of Shows on April 7 at the MetLife Stadium in New York.
Meltzer said: “Nothing official has been decided regarding Cena, partially because nobody knows what’s going to happen with Lars Sullivan, who has been told he’s welcome back when he’s ready.”
Cena got injured as a result of Drew McIntyre’s Ankle Lock during a No1 Contender’s Fatal 4-Way Match which also included Baron Corbin and Finn Balor.
The former World Heavyweight Champion then limped to the back after Balor won the match and aggravated the injury during training.
A WWE statement read: “As first revealed on WWE Now this afternoon, John Cena will not compete in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match tonight due to his ankle injury.
“Cena first sustained the left ankle injury during the main event of the Jan. 14 episode of Raw.
“In that match, the 16-time World Champion faced Finn Balor, Baron Corbin and Drew McIntyre for the right to challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at the WWE Royal Rumble event.
“As seen in the video below, the injury occurred when McIntyre trapped Cena in the ankle lock submission hold.
“Cena then appears to favor his left ankle while leaving the ring after Raw went off the air.
“The Cenation Leader was unable to sufficiently recover in time for tonight’s 30-Man Royal Rumble Match, and has been ruled out of the bout as a result.”
