THE sudden death of an 18-year-old sister would be an unbearable blow for any brother.
But the death of Louis Tomlinson’s 18-year-old sister is a double tragedy for the singer as he is still mourning the loss of his beloved mum Johanna.
Midwife Johanna Deakin died of leukaemia in December 2016, at the age of 43, leaving Louis, Felicite and their five siblings bereft.
The former One Direction singer was incredibly close to his mother and was heartbroken by her loss, struggling to come to terms with his grief and admitting he misses her every day.
‘Being there for my family has helped me cope’
Only this week, Louis released his poignant tribute to his mum, Two Of Us, and he had been due to perform the track at Comic Relief on Friday.
It includes the lines: “You’ll never know how much I miss you. The day that they took you, I wish it was me instead.”
The ‘unexplained’ death of his little sister, found dead in her Earl’s Court flat after a suspected heart attack, comes days after the 27-year-old singer revealed he felt responsible for looking after his six younger siblings since losing his mum.
He told The Sun’s Dan Wootton: “I’m lucky in a way that, because I’m the oldest, there’s a lot of responsibility that falls on my head.
“And that’s kept me driven, that’s kept me determined and that’s helped with going through all that stuff I think is being there for my family.
He added: “I’m lucky to have really, really good people around me. My family are amazing, I’ve got great friends, my girlfriend’s amazing, my boy’s amazing.“
Johannah, who was born in Doncaster, gave birth to Loius when she was just 18 and split with his dad Troy Austin when he was a toddler.
She then had four children with Mark Tomlinson – Lottie, 20, Félicité and identical twins Daisy and Phoebe, 15 – who she split with in 2010.
She went on to marry Dan and have twins Earnest and Doris, now four.
As the oldest of seven, Louis had a special bond with Johannah.
He rushed to her side when she went into premature labour with the twins in 2014 and was best man at her wedding to Dan Deakin, the same year.
They became even closer as she helped him adjust to fatherhood when he had his own son, Freddie, with ex Briana Jungwirth in 2016.
Louis was by her side as she battled aggressive leukaemia throughout 2016. and was devastated when she passed away at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.
‘She wanted everyone to be happy and loving’
Tragically, Felicite responded to her mother’s death by tweeting a simple broken heart emoji.
Johannah’s husband Dan Deakin described the mum-of-seven as “Incredibly selfless.”
“She would always look to put other people before herself. She desired nothing more than for everyone around her to be happy and loving.
“She worked tirelessly on numerous charity campaigns, creating memories for many individuals and their families.
“It wasn’t uncommon for Johannah to hear through the media of an individual in need of assistance, and she would immediately make it her objective to get that person what they often desperately needed, and rarely without success.”
Johannah – known as Jay – worked as a midwife and a TV assistant but when Louis’s band shot to super-stardom she began focusing on charities, in aid of terminally ill children.
In December 2014, she funded a Believe In Magic Party, alongside Louis, at London Zoo and met cancer sufferer Harvey Hext and his mother Sarah.
When Harvey died, Johannah whisked the family away on holidays to Disneyland, got them tickets to see the X Factor and treated them to luxury hotel stays.
Sarah Hext said: “Jay doesn’t have to help us or anyone else but she does it because she wants too and she is truly grateful for what she has.”
In August 2015, Johannah hosted the Believe In Magic Charity Ball at London’s Natural History Museum, which raised millions of pounds to help youngsters with terminal conditions.
She was also patron of Niamh’s Next Step, a Wellingborough-based organisation that fundraises for research into the children’s cancer neuroblastoma.
It was set up in memory of Niamh Curry, who died of the disease aged just five.
Johannah was incredibly proud of her son and said he looked after the family after finding fame with One Direction at the age of 18 and offered to fund his siblings’ school trips.
“He’s a really nice brother,” she said. “He always asks me, ‘Tell me what trips they’ve got, where do they want to go? Let me use my money to pay for their trips’.
“He’s always been like that. He’s not a materialistic person himself, but he likes to give people things.
“He spoils me and the girls and he’s happiest doing that.”
Five week’s before she died she shared a picture on Instagram of Louis at the Pride of Britain Awards alongside the caption: “My perfect boy”.
The heartbreaking Two Of Us lyrics that show Louis's pain over mum
It’s been a minute since I called you
Just to hear the answerphone
Yeah, I know that you won’t get this
But I’ll leave a message so I’m not alone
This morning I woke up still dreaming
With memories playing through my head
You’ll never know how much I miss you
The day that they took you, I wish it was me instead
But you once told me, ‘Don’t give up
You can do it day by day’
And diamonds, they don’t turn to dust or fade away
So I will keep you day and night, here until the day I die
I’ll be living one life for the two of us
At the time of Johannah’s death Louis’s former bandmates tweeted their own tributes.
“Louis, I’m so sorry for you my brother my heart aches for you, just know I love you the same from a million miles away as i do right next to you. I’m always here for you through everything as you have been for me.
“My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this incredibly sad time I can’t begin to imagine what you are all going through. Rip Johanna you are forever in my thoughts.”
Zayn Malik tweeted: “@Louis_Tomlinson love you bro! All of your family is in my prayers. proud of your strength and know your mum is too x’.
