Game of Thrones fans watched one of the most violent episodes of the HBO epic series last week as Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) burnt Kings Landing to the ground.
The Bells saw Daenerys complete her transformation into the Mad Queen when she refused to accept the city’s surrender and instead set fire to it.
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) has stood by his queen despite a warning from Varys (Conleth Hill) in the last episode who feared that she would become a tyrant like her father the Mad King.
However, in new pictures released by HBO it looks like Tyrion has a lot to worry about, after ignoring Danerys’ orders and setting his brother Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) free.
When the hand of the Queen discovered that Jon Snow’s (Kit Harrington) true heritage is Targaryen, he confided in Varys, which ultimately got him killed.
The youngest Lannister exposed Varys’ betrayal to Daenerys and watched as he was burnt alive by her last remaining dragon.
Despite his brutal death, Varys got the last laugh as before he died, he told Tyion he “hoped he was wrong,” and viewers now know he was right all along.
Tyrion has been determined to keep the deaths of innocent people at a minimum and it was one of the reasons why he was drawn to Daenarys in the first place.
He freed Jaime and urged him to flee with Cersei Lannister (Lena Heady) and ring the city bells to inform Daenerys that King’s Landing had surrendered.
But when the bells rang out across the city, the Mad Queen ignored them and Tyrion’s worst fears were confirmed.
HBO released two promo photos this week with the first showing Daenerys addressing her Unsullied army as the city continues to burn in the background.
In the second, Tyrion can be seen looking concerned as he stands in the wreckage of the city he desperately wanted to save.
Will he regret his decision to stand by his queen and kill Daenerys in a bid to stop her tyrannic rule?
Although it appears that Jaime and Cersei have died, when Daenerys discovers that Tyrion set his brother free she will not be happy.
Now that he has seen her transformation into the Mad Queen will he kill her in order to protect himself?
Meanwhile, as Daenerys’ allies turn their back on her, Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) may emerge as the natural contender for the Iron Throne.
Arya Stark (Maise Williams) was seen at the end of The Bells climbing on a white house presumably preparing to kill Daenerys.
However if she succeeds, it seems unlikely that she would want the Iron Throne for herself.
Despite Jon Snow’s heritage, he has said numerous times that he does not wish to be the King.
Could the eldest Stark, who has been left to rule Winterfell, take the Throne?
Game of Thrones concludes Sunday on HBO in the USA and the following day on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
