Cleaning Up is set in Canary Wharf and follows the story of Sam, an office cleaner who struggles to maintain her life as a devoted mum after becoming addicted to online gambling.
The show explores how far Sam will go to survive and at what cost. Can Sam out-smart the system and will she be able to overcome her addictive personality?
Sam’s gamble may have paid off for now, but tonight’s episode saw her gambling throw her into deeper water.
Tonight’s episode saw Sam and Swanny (played by Lloyd Owen) grow closer together as he entrusted her to make a large investment for him.
Sam was seduced by Swanny’s glamorous and risky world, and went to desperate lengths to pull off the extraordinary task, including buying a dress and going on a date with him.
As Sam reveled in her new persona, Dave started to notice the change in her, and then noticed the £25,000 of savings that had gone into their daughter’s accounts.
Glynn had noticed that Sam was still in financial trouble at home after receiving a worrying visit from her landlady.
In denial about her dependence, Sam relented to Alice’s pressure and agreed to go to a meeting for gambling addicts – but ran into the debt collector who recognised her.
Elsewhere in show, Jess and Mina were both put under pressure to come clean as the investigation into illegal activity in the office came to a head, but it was Sam who took the wrap.
However, the biggest problem for Sam was Dave removing the £25,000 from Lily Cook’s account before Sam could invest it in shares and transfer it to another account. Will she be rumbled?
Viewers instantly took to social media after the episode, concerned for Sam following Dave’s actions.
One fan tweeted: “#CleaningUp what have you done Dave!!!!! I’m hoping for a happy ending but each week she just makes the worst decisions.”
“Not sure how much more of this I can take! There needs to be a happy ending for Sam! #CleaningUp,” posted another.
A third gasped: “Yikes Dave! What did you just do?! #CleaningUp.”
“Can’t believe dave did that! She still owes the bailiff £12k to… can’t believe she just lost on the bet. Let’s hope the market plummets and he looses his money, falls in love with her and that’s her happy ever after #CleaningUp,” wrote another.
At the end of the episode, Sam then risked all of the money she had through more gambling – but lost everything.
Next week’s concluding episode teases further controversy and heartache.
The synopsis reads: “With Swanny on her back desperate for his money, Sam’s world falls apart when her landlady returns with some devastating news.
“Time is up for Sam as she faces the disastrous consequences of her actions and is separated from her girls. Coming clean to Dave could solve Sam’s problems, but she risks losing her family.
“Jess is heart-broken when her business plan for a new café falls through. With no job and no home, Sam moves in with Jess and together they concoct a brilliant but dangerous idea of how to get their lives back on track.
“Realising they have been double-crossed, the Network hunt Sam down and will go to any lengths to protect their names. Knowing that they have run out of options, Sam, Jess and Mina plan to confront the criminal unit.”
Cleaning Up concludes next Wednesday on ITV at 9pm.
