Yesterday, the final Avengers Endgame trailer launched along with the first official poster. Very little is known about the mysterious movie, with the limited footage keeping the plot well under wraps. Nevertheless, it’s reasonable to assume that Avengers Endgame isn’t just focused on Captain America, but is technically Captain America 4. The first sign of this is seeing Steve Rogers’ front-and-centre pose on the poster and the fact that Chris Evans is second on the billing of stars after Robert Downey Jr – the highest Evans has ever been on an Avengers movie.
This suggests Cap will have significant screen time in the movie, after not having that much to do in Avengers Infinity War.
Aside from Thanos’ hero’s journey, Infinity War was also much more focused on Thor (who shared the most amount of screen time with the Mad Titan).
It certainly makes sense for the franchise lead Downey Jr to be prominent across both movies, while the other two solo trilogy movie leads get their chance to shine in an Avengers movie each.
And understandably, Thor star Hemsworth was second on the billing of the Infinity War poster, while Evans was behind both him and Hulk star Mark Ruffalo.
But in terms of Avengers Endgame, it looks like Captain America has as major a role as Thor had – if not more – Infinity War.
CAPTAIN AMERICA IS WEARING HIS WINTER SOLDIER SUIT IN AVENGERS ENDGAME – DOES THIS PROVE TIME TRAVEL?
Aside from analysing the poster, directors The Russo Brothers have essentially teased that Endgame is – in a way – their Captain America 4.
Last year, Joe Russo told Andy McCarroll Movies: “For us, this was the challenge of telling the story but also completing the personal journey that we started as storytellers in Winter Soldier.
“So the story that began in Winter Soldier and that ends in Avengers 4 is a… there’s a very personal arc there for us.
“I think you’ll understand our point of view as filmmakers and who we are as people when you watch all four of those movies together.”
AVENGERS ENDGAME TRAILER BREAKDOWN
Marvel fans will know The Winter Soldier was the second Captain America film and The Russo Brothers’ first MCU movie. After this, they made his third solo movie Civil War and have followed it with Avengers Infinity War and Endgame.
And since Cap was more on the sidelines in Infinity War, Endgame certainly looks – in part at least – to be his fourth solo outing. After all, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame, so their story arc will be prominent all the way through.
But just how will the latter epic tie up the arc first introduced in The Winter Soldier? Perhaps Cap will give his life to save Bucky? Maybe. But at the very least Steve and Tony will have to make up after their dispute in Civil War.
Avengers Endgame is released in UK cinemas on April 25, 2019.
